ONAM 2023
Kerala's Harvest Festival

On 2nd September the Clubhouse was transformed into a very traditional Onam setting. Many hours of planning went into the execution of elaborate pookkalams that were painstakingly assembled into colourful kaleidoscopic patterns. Ornate brass statues, thrikkakara appan [diyas], urli’s and other items were lent for the occasion by several households. The welcoming entrance promised of many unfolding surprises. Sustainability was introduced in the form of the fresh coconut stall by a local vendor, who had to replenish his stock, and, the beautiful boats made of bamboo and dried coconut leaves which was the centre of attraction in the lawn.
After an interesting introduction to the origin of the Harvest Festival, we had a surprise visit from the benevolent King Mahabali who really suited his role and seem to revel in the festivity as much as we did! He was bought into the venue in procession to the pounding rhythmic drum beats of Chenda. Once he was seated on his throne the cultural program commenced. A choir sang the anthem of Travancore State and another song that vocalised the harmonious reign of King Maaveli (as he was affectionately called by his subjects).
This was followed by Kaikottikali a popular group folk dance where women typically sway gracefully to music and dance clapping and swirling in a circle.
A popular hit from a movie was followed by two dancers doing the Mohaniattam which encompassed the spirit of Kerala. Its lush greenery, swaying coconut palms, carefully planted paddy fields, abundance of harvest, the famous boat race and of course the energy of the Chenda Melam.
The finale was the catchy Kuttanadan Punjayile that sets the pace and rhythm to the boat race!
This was followed by the lip smacking Onam Sadhya a multi-course vegetarian meal served on plantain leaves. Tantalizing the palette with a variety of tastes from tangy, pungent, bitter, salty .... to sweet.
Thanks to all who spent time and energy to bring to us a most delightful afternoon and introduce the community to the charm and allure of Gods own country.
No need for more....the pictures and videos will speak for themselves.

ONAM SADHYA AND CELEBRATION

THANK YOU!
To the many volunteers who supported this year's Onam celebration.
The success of these events depends on the participation of individuals from within our community. If you have lived at Windmills for 6 years or for 6 months and have a special talent, skill, or time to offer, we encourage you to volunteer for the next event. New residents are especially welcome; it's a great way to get to know your neighbors and celebrate a special event in the life of our community.
