GARBA 2022

Dussehra Festival at Windmills

PHOTO-2022-10-09-16-45-41.jpg

8th October 2022 was a night of fun & festivity.

Windmillers participated in the Dandiya event with exuberance and gusto. Once the sun set, brightly coloured ghagras swirled around when the ladies danced with gay abandon, kids and men dressed in traditional attire clicked their dandiyas and joined in the fun.

The decoration was colourful and carefully chosen keeping to the theme, the music was  traditional, the dances perfectly choreographed, the menu had all the Gujarati delicacies and the atmosphere was electric!!

Enjoy browsing.

P.S.

I was always confused about the difference between Garba and Dandiya, both of which have their origins in Gujarat. Sharing the info for those who are interested:

Garba is performed to bhajans and chants & has a devotional appeal

Garba is danced before an aarti as a worshipping ritual. Whereas Dandiya is played later in the evening after the aarti, for enjoyment

Garba has a a variety of hand and feet movements and occasional clapping. Dandiya is played with colourful dandiya sticks.

Dandiya has to have an even number of dancers but not so in Garba.

Songs for Garba are centered around the Goddess, Dandiya songs are about Lord Krishna with Radha and the gopis.

THANK YOU!

We have to thank 3 newcomers to Windmills who sportingly took on organising the event:

Congratulations Kajal, Mahati and Priya you did a great job!

Hema, Latha and Shalini were their mentors and helped them put the event together.

Videos of the dances that you will see on the Gallery were taken by Sachin Bansal.

Last but not least, the credit for putting the event up online for all of us to relive and share goes to none other than Brian Feagans.
