SURILI SIRENS JUMP OUT OF THE BOX

After a long hiatus of community events, Windmillers were eagerly looking forward to the 23rd June for an evening of Retro music. We had absolutely no idea what it was going to be, other than we would hear music from the 60’s and 70’s. Thanks to the publicity with a string of continuous teasers the suspense built up and as expected the theatre was filled to capacity!

As soon as the team, beautifully coordinated in black and white, began their medley of familiar and peppy numbers the audience merrily joined in and the whole evening just turned out to be one of eager & spontaneous participation. The compering was extremely witty and the Surili Sirens moved seamlessly from one item on the agenda to the other. We hadn’t had so much fun in a long long time!

Let’s start from the very beginning , a very good place to start….

Amruta Bendre, Anjali Kini, Anupama Phansalkar, Biraj Kalyan, Deepa Anand,

Krishnaveni Ram, Malathi Sridhar, Latha Raghu & Sunitha Vasanth

were our choir members for Republic Day. It was due to the rousing cheers, positive feedback, enjoyable practise sessions and their love for music that they decided to continue singing together. 🎼❤️🎼

It didn’t matter an iota that members of the group had varied skill levels their level of passion for music was the the same.

Not all ‘masti’, going forward the non-negotiable rule was - time commitment for regular practice.

Thus began the journey as a group, that over time, emerged as a band - the Surili Sirens band!

One day after putting together their first medley they hit upon the idea to regale music lovers @ Windmills with their retro track. They conceptualised themes, selected songs, fine tuned the scale & tempo and settled down to serious practise sessions - all of which were spiced with a lot of camaraderie, fun & food!!

One by one different ideas came tumbling in … Dumb Charades , Funtakshari & Open Mic too! The tempo for a community event kept building up procuring coordinated costumes down to black and white polka dotted nail paint!  It was very apparent that a lot of practise had one into putting the show together. It was well rehearsed  & presented with passion!

In a ‘surili’ manner they persuaded Craftworks to curate a special menu so after house full at the theatre it was house full at the Cafe.

A perfect end to a fun filled evening.

Hoping that there is a re-run in store next year!
